Ntshingwayo (formerly Chelmsford) is the third largest dam in KwaZulu-Natal and is an excellent venue for swimming and relaxing in the sun as well as enjoying various water sports, including water skiing, jet skiing, kite surfing, canoeing and boating. Fresh water fishing is great fun in the area, with excellent opportunities to catch carp and scalies. The game reserve offers excellent game viewing opportunities, with large herds of springbok, blesbok and red hartebeest, as well as a significant population of the rare and elusive oribi antelope. Chelmsford Camp has eight fully equipped five-bed chalets featuring two bedrooms, a bathroom, a lounge/dining room, kitchenette and barbecue facilities set close to the water's edge, with magnificent views across the water. Additional rustic accommodation is available at Richgate in four five-bed chalets. Richgate Hunting lodge is also available out of hunting season. A four-bed rustic mountain hut is available for overnight accommodation at Ncandu Nature Reserve, only 40 kilometres from Chelmsford tucked into the Northern Drakensberg escarpment. Camping facilities are also available.
DirectionsTurn off the national road N11, 80kms from Ladysmith on the north side of the dam, 19 kms south of Newcastle onto district road D210 towards Normandien.
The gate is 6kms along this road.
Pets are not permitted into the reserve.
"No entry fees will be charged for visits by KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) Primary and Secondary School groups, from KZN Schools to KZN Protected Areas and St Lucia Crocodile Centre provided that such visits:
1. are authorised by the Head of the school
2. are booked in advance with the Officer in Charge of the Protected Area or Crocodile Centre
3. do not take place over weekends, during KZN Provincial school holidays or Public Holidays". |
